Chances are, you'll deal with one or more of the common dog training issues as you acclimate your boxer dog to your family. It's more or less inevitable, unless you're adopting an already well-trained adult dog. And how often does that really happen?

But if you adopt a boxer puppy, you're getting a dog that hasn't yet learned what good behavior means or what his/her limits are. Just like a human baby/toddler, it's not that your puppy wants to be bad... it just doesn't know any better. And it's your job to teach him/her!

Of course, taking your boxer puppy to a puppy training class can be very helpful in starting to teach dog training commands and getting him socialized with other dogs, but there will be a number of issues that you'll need to learn how to deal with on your own. So, that's the purpose of this section of the site.

  • Spoiling - is it a good thing to do? There's a lot of debate about spoiling your dog. Find out more about the definition of spoiling and whether it can ever be the right way to deal with a dog.

  • Biting & chewing — Dogs, especially puppies, do seem to have an innate instinct to chew. And chewing is good for them, as it helps their teeth to stay strong and tartar-free. But biting is seldom a positive behavior and should not be allowed. It is a mark of aggression; learn how to nip it in the bud.

  • Leash training — If you intend to ever take you boxer puppy for a walk, you're going to have to deal with leash training, as it's not safe for a dog to run around (outside of your fenced yard) unrestrained.

  • Potty/crate training — Puppies must be taught where it's appropriate to relieve their bowels and bladder. Get tips on crate training, potty training and overall housebreaking of your boxer pup.

If you opt to train your boxer on your own, you might still get some professional advice by reading a book on dog training. I found this one from Kingdom of Pets to be really helpful: Secrets of Dog Training
