Boxer Dogs Are Great, Aren't They?

Wanting to learn more about Boxer Dogs Secrets and who is behind this site? No problem...

Who could resist those eyes?

Hi, my name is Kathi MacNaughton, and as I explained on the home page, I wasn't always a boxer dog lover. I HAVE always been a dog person. But with 2 kids and small poodle in a 2-bedroom condo, I really didn't think I needed a second dog. My 11-year old daughter, though, had other ideas...

Before I knew it, we were thinking of adopting an adorable boxer pup we'd seen at our local pet store.

I must have been crazy!

Luckily, I maintained enough sense not to make an impulsive decision I might regret later. I told the girls we had to go home and think about it overnight. I also said we had to talk about how we would pay for it. So, we took one last look at the boxer puppy's sweet face and then headed home.

We Tried Not to Make an Impulse Decision...

On the way, we stopped at the library and checked out a book on boxers. I knew nothing about the breed, and wanted to find out a bit more. When we got home, we talked seriously about what it would mean to add a second dog to our lives and our home. The girls assured me they would take care of her, from feeding her to taking her for walks regularly. I'd also had the girls on a savings plan (putting away small portions of their allowances) for a couple of years, and they decided they'd like to use their savings to help pay for the boxer dog we'd fallen in love with.

I spent the evening reading the book and didn't learn anything that put me off boxer dogs. In fact, I read that they are generally sweet and loving (though they might look ferocious) and that they're very devoted to their families. It was all good. And who could resist those big brown eyes you see above?

By the next morning, we were all still feeling the strong pull to get the boxer puppy, so we trooped back to the pet store... only to find another family seriously looking at her! We were on pins and needles waiting to see what they would do. Would they buy her? Was she not meant for us after all?

Fate Stepped In...

Finally, after about 30 to 40 minutes, they decided they weren't sure and wanted to think about it. "Oh well," I thought, "You snooze, you lose!" We scooped her up the minute they left the store and made our purchase. It wasn't long before we had our own little boxer puppy riding home with us, complete with all kinds of boxer dog supplies, like a crate, dog dishes, special dog food, and more.

We named our puppy Lucy... I know, kind of a silly name, but it's what my youngest, Jenn, wanted to call her and it was her after all who most wanted a puppy. So, Lucy it was... and we found the name suited her. She fulfilled her promise... she was just as sweet and loving as she looked in the pet store.

She integrated well with our poodle and even though she was a big dog, she did just fine with condo living. We did take her outside a lot and for walks around our little lake behind the condo. We all loved her, and she loved all of us, but Jenn was definitely her most special human.

Unfortunately, Lucy was with us only a short time, due to a brain tumor that took her life quite suddenly and swiftly one February weekend after 6 short years together. But, her stay with us helped us learn what a great breed boxers are. Since she died, I've thought often of buying another boxer, but the fear of going through another death in such a short time has been a barrier. Still, when my Maddie (poodle) died a couple of years after Lucy, we opted for a "mini boxer", a Boston Terrier. You can read about Gizmo here.

A Bit More About Me

I've been building websites for years. With a history of being a nurse, both in the hospital and in home health care, when I wanted to make a career change in the late 90s, I moved quite naturally into consumer health education writing, both for offline and online venues. At the same time, I was learning all I could about building successful websites of my own.

My favorite kind of website to make is a content website. As a writer, I enjoy writing about health and lots of other topics too, especially things I'm passionate about, like boxer dogs! Here are some of the other content websites I've built over the years:

Oh yeah, and I'm one of the expert writers at HealthCentral.com in the subject areas of asthma, allergies, and COPD!

In the years since we adopted Lucy and watched her grow, my daughters have grown up themselves and moved on to lives of their own. My youngest, Jenn, has 2 dogs of her own now, both mutts, that she loves dearly. I've moved several times and now live in Idaho, where I own quite a menagerie of my "second litter" of furry children with my husband. We have 3 dogs (black lab, Boston terrier, and shih tzu) as well as a cat. And guess what?

There are quite a few boxer dog owners out here in Boise, Idaho, that we meet on the local river path, the Boise Greenbelt. We're always thrilled to see a boxer... they are beautiful, loving dogs!
